The Promise of Eternal Life
John the Apostle - El Greco
John Chapter 5
5:24. Amen, amen, I say unto you that he who heareth my word and believeth
him that sent me hath life everlasting: and cometh not into judgment, but is
passed from death to life.
5:25. Amen, amen, I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when
the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
5:26. For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given to the Son
also to have life in himself.
5:27. And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of
5:28. Wonder not at this: for the hour cometh wherein all that are in the
graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.
5:29. And they that have done good things shall come forth unto the
resurrection of life: but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of
John Chapter 6
6:33. For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven and giveth
life to the world.
6:34. They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread.
6:35. And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me
shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.
6:36. But I said unto you that you also have seen me, and you believe not.
6:37. All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me: and him that cometh
to me, I will not cast out.
6:38. Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of
him that sent me.
6:39. Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he
hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last
6:40. And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who
seeth the Son and believeth in him may have life everlasting. And I will raise
him up in the last day.
6:41. The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the
living bread which came down from heaven.
6:42. And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and
mother we know? How then saith he: I came down from heaven?
6:43. Jesus therefore answered and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.
6:44. No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw
him. And I will raise him up in the last day.
6:45. It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God.
Every one that hath heard of the Father and hath learned cometh forth me.
6:46. Not that any man hath seen the Father: but he who is of God, he hath
seen the Father.
6:47. Amen, amen, I say unto you: He that believeth in me hath everlasting
6:48. I am the bread of life.
6:49. Your fathers did eat manna in the desert: and are dead.
6:50. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven: that if any man eat
of it, he may not die.
6:51. I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
6:52. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread
that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
6:53. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man
give us his flesh to eat?
6:54. Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat
the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.
6:55. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life:
and I will raise him up in the last day.
6:56. For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.
6:57. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me: and I
6:58. As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father: so he
that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.
6:59. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers
did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this bread shall live for ever.
6:60. These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.
6:61. Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard;
and who can hear it?
6:62. But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said
to them: Doth this scandalize you?
6:63. If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
6:64. It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The
words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
6:65. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the
beginning who they were that did not believe and who he was that would betray
6:66. And he said: Therefore did I say to you that no man can come to me,
unless it be given him by my Father.
6:67. After this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with
6:68. Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?
6:69. And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast
the words of eternal life.
6:70. And we have believed and have known that thou art the Christ, the
Son of God.
6:71. Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a
6:72. Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about
to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.
John Chapter 10
10:27. My sheep hear my voice. And I know them: and they follow me.
10:28. And I give them life everlasting: and they shall not perish for
ever. And no man shall pluck them out of my hand.
10:29. That which my Father hath given me is greater than all: and no one can
snatch them out of the hand of my Father.
10:30. I and the Father are one.
John Chapter 11
11:21. Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my
brother had not died.
11:22. But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will
give it thee.
11:23. Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.
11:24. Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the
resurrection at the last day.
11:25. Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that
believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
11:26. And every one that liveth and believeth in me shall not die for
ever. Believest thou this?
11:27. She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ,
the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.
John Chapter 14
14:1. Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God: believe also in
14:2. In my Father’s house there are many mansions. If not, I would
have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you.
14:3. And if I shall go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and will take you to myself: that where I am, you also may be.
14:4. And whither I go you know: and the way you know.
14:5. Thomas saith to him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest. And how
can we know the way?
14:6. Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No
man cometh to the Father, but by me.
14:7. If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father
also: and from henceforth you shall know him. And you have seen him.
Apocalypse Chapter 21
21:1. I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the
first earth was gone: and the sea is now no more. The first heaven and the
first earth was gone, being changed, not as to their substance, but in their
21:2. And I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of
heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
21:3. And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold
the tabernacle of God with men: and he will dwell with them. And they shall be
his people: and God himself with them shall be their God.
21:4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall
be no more. Nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the
former things are passed away.
21:5. And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things
new. And he said to me: Write. For these words are most faithful and true.
21:6. And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega: the Beginning
and the End. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water
of life, freely.
21:7. He that shall overcome shall possess these things. And I will be
his God: and he shall be my son.
21:8. But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and
whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, they shall have their
portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second
