Ritus Confirmatiónis
E Pontificáli Romano Deprómtus

The Rite of Confirmation
Taken from the Roman Pontifical

The bishop vests in rochet, or a surplice if he is a regular, amice, stole, and white cope, with his miter and pastoral staff, or if the Sacrament is to be administered without solemnity, in a white stole and simple miter.

Those to be Confirmed occupy seats at the front of the church.  All rise and sing the hymn Veni, Creátor Spíritus as the Bishop and his ministers make their entrance.

Seated at the faldstool, the bishop may preach to the candidates if he so desires.  After which he washes his hands, puts aside the miter, and stands facing the candidates who genuflect before him, saying:

Spíritus Sanctus supervéniat in vos, et virtus Altíssimi custódiat vos a peccatis.

May the Holy Ghost descend upon you, and may the power of the Most High preserve you from sin.

R. Amen.

The bishop extend his hands
over those to be confirmed, saying:

Oremus.

Let us pray.

Each person to be confirmed kneels before the bishop, the sponsor standing behind and placing the right hand on his shoulder.  Calling each by his new name, the bishop signs each candidate on the forehead with his thumb, which has been dipped in Holy Chrism, simultaneously extending the fingers of his hand over the candidate’s head.  The bishop then makes the sign of the Cross three times over the candidates head

N. Signo te signo Cru + cis: Et confírmo te Chrísmate salútis: In nómine Pa + tris, et Fí @ lii, et Spíritus + Sancti.

N. I sign thee with the sign of the + Cross: and I confirm thee with the Chrism of salvation. In the name of the Father + and of the Son, + and of the Holy Ghost.

R. Amen.

R. Amen.

Gently, the bishop strikes each confirmand
on the cheek, saying:

Pax tecum.

Peace be with thee.

When all have been confirmed, the following is sung or recited while the bishop cleanses his fingers with a bit of bread and washes his hands

Confírma hoc, Deus, quod operátus es in nobis, a templo sancto tuo, quod est in Jerúsalem.

Confirm, O God, what Thou hast wrought in us, from Thy holy temple, which is in Jerusalem.

V. Glória Patri et Fílio et Spíritui Sancto.

The bishop turns toward the altar and sings

R. And with thy spirit.

V. Oremus.

V. Let us pray. O God, You gave Your Holy Spirit to Your apostles, and willed that through them and their successors the same gift should be delivered to all the faithful: look graciously on the service we humbly render to You; grant that the same Spirit, coming down upon those whose foreheads we have anointed with the holy chrism, and signed with the sign of the holy cross, may by His gracious indwelling make them a temple of His glory, You Who are God, living and reigning with the Father and the Holy Ghost, world without end.

R. Amen.

R. Amen

The bishop turns and blesses those newly Confirmed.

V. Ecce sic benedicétur omnis homo, qui timet Dóminum. Bene + dícat vos Dóminus ex Sion, ut videátis bona Jerúsalem ómnibus diébus vitæ vestræ, et habeátis vitam ætérnam.

V. Behold, thus shall every man be blessed who fears the Lord: May the Lord bless + you out of Sion, that you may see the good things of Jerusalem all the days of your life, and have life everlasting.

R. Amen.

R. Amen.

The Bishop sits down, and puts on his mitre.
The newly confirmed recite the following prayers together:

 The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation.  But Deliver us from evil.  Amen

The Angelic Salutation: Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Bishop then gives the Pontifical Blessing to the entire congregation.

If the bishop is to celebrate Mass a hymn may be sung as he vests
