Ave Maria!The Sacrament of Confirmation
Conferred Within MassThose to be Confirmed occupy seats at the front of the church. After the Gospel, all rise and sing the hymn Veni,Creátor Spíritus.
1 Veni, Creator Spiritus, Mentes tuorum visita: Imple superna gratia Quae tu creasti pectora.
2 Qui diceris Paraclitus, Altisimi donum Dei, Fons vivus, ignis, caritas, Et spiritalis unctio.
3 Tu septiformis munere, Digitus paternae dexterae, Tu rite promissum Patris, Sermone ditans guttura.
4 Accende lumen sensibus, Infunde amorem cordibus, Infirma nostri corporis Virtute firmans perpeti.
5 Hostem repellas longius, Pacemque dones protinus: Ductore sic te praevio, Vitemus omne noxium.
6 Per te sciamus da Patrem, Noscamus atque Filium Teque utriusque Spiritum Credamus omni tempore.
7 Deo Patri sit gloria, Et Filio, que a mortuis Surrexit, ac Paraclito, In saeculorum saecula. Amen.
At the conclusion of the hymn, the bishop turns toward those to be confirmed and says:
May the Holy Ghost descend upon you, and may the power of the Most High preserve you from sin.
R. Amen
V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who hath made heaven and earth.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit
The bishop extend his hands over those to be confirmed, saying:
Let us pray.
V. Almighty and everlasting God, who hast brought these servants to a new life by water and the Holy Ghost, and forgiven them their sins, send forth upon them from heaven Thy sevenfold Spirit, the Paraclete.
R. Amen.
V. The Spirit of Wisdom and understanding.
R. Amen,
V. The Spirit of counsel and fortitude.
R. Amen.
Vv. The Spirit of knowledge and piety
R. Amen.
v. Fill them with the Spirit of Thy holy fear and sign them eternal life. Through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who with Thee and the same Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
R. Amen.
The bishop assumes the mitre and crosier.
Each person to be confirmed kneels before the bishop, the sponsor standing behind and placing the right hand on his shoulder. Calling each by his new name, the bishop signs each candidate on the forehead with his thumb, which has been dipped in Holy Chrism, simultaneously extending the fingers of his hand over the candidate’s head.
The bishop then makes the sign of the Cross three times over the candidates head.
N. Signo te signo Crucis:
Et confírmo te Chrísmate salútis:
In nómine Patris, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti.
R. Amen.and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.N. I sign thee with the sign of the Cross:
and I confirm thee with the Chrism of salvation.
In the name of the Father
R. Amen.
Gently, the bishop strikes each confirmand on the cheek, saying:
Pax tecum.
Peace be with thee.
When all have been confirmed, the bishop cleanses his fingers with a bit of bread and washes his hands:
The Bishop sits down, and puts on his mitre. The newly confirmed recite the following prayers together:
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our
Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into
heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living
and the dead….
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation. But Deliver us from evil. Amen
The Angelic Salutation: Hail Mary
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
The servers take the mitre and crosier and the bishop resumes the celebration of Holy Mass.
The newly Confirmed are first to receive Holy Communion after the bishop and clergy
