The Blessing of Firstfruits
on the Feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 15th:

Priest: Our help + is in the name of the Lord.
All: Who made heaven and earth.

Psalm lxiv may be recited. When it is, those on the Gospel side recite the verses designated "1," and those on the Epistle side recite the verses designated "2."

Psalm lxiv

   1. To Thee, we owe our hymn of praise, O God, in Sion; * to Thee must vows be fulfilled, Thou who hear prayers.

   2. To Thee all flesh must come * because of wicked deeds.

   1. We are overcome by our sins; * Thou art the pardoner.

   2. Blessed the man Thou choose, and bring * to dwell in Thy courts.

   1. May we be filled with the good things of Thy house, * the holy things of Thy temple.

   2. With awe inspiring deeds of justice Thou answer us, * O God our savior.

   1. The hope of all the ends of the earth, * and of the distant seas.

    2. Thou set the mountains in place by Thy power, * Thou who art girt with might;

   1. Thou still the roaring of the seas, * the roaring of their waves, and the tumult of the peoples.

    2. And the dwellers at the earth's ends are in fear at Thy marvels; * the farthest east and west Thou make resound with joy.

   1. Thou hast visited the land and watered it; * greatly hast Thou enriched it.

    2. God's watercourses are filled, Thou hast prepared the grain. * Thus, Thou hast prepared the land.

    1. Drenching its furrows, * breaking up its clods.

    2. Softening it with showers, * blessing its yield.

    1. Thou hast crowned the year with Thy bounty, * and Thy paths overflow with a rich harvest.;

    2. The untilled meadows overflow with it, * and rejoicing clothes the hills.

    1. The hills are garmented with flocks, and the valleys blanketed with grain. * They shout and sing for joy.

    2. Glory be to the Father and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost.

    1. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Priest: O Lord, grant us Thy goodness.
All: And the Earth will bring forth Thy fruit.

Priest: Watering the mountains from above.
All: That the fruit of Thy work may fill the earth.

Priest: Producing grass for the animals.
All: And herbs for the service of men.

Priest: Bringing forth bread from the earth.
All: And wine to gladden the hearts of men.

Priest: That their faces may shine with oil.
All: And bread fortify their hearts.

Priest: Send forth Thy word, and heal them.
All: Deliver them from all destruction.

Priest: O Lord hear my prayer.
All: And let my cry come unto Thee.

Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.

Priest: Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, by Thy word Thou didst create the heavens, the earth, the sea, the visible, and the invisible, out of nothing. Thou hast given plants and trees to the use of men, and to bring forth animals upon the earth. Out of Thy holiness, Thou hast given seed to be sown, to bring forth its kind; herbs to be used, not only as food, but also as medicine. We beseech Thee with thought and word, bless + these various herbs and fruits; so that in addition to yielding their natural goodness, they may fill us with Thy grace; and that through their use, men and beasts may be protected from illness and adversity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ....

All: Amen.

Priest: Let us pray. O God, through Thy servant Moses, Thou didst command the children of Israel to bring the most beautiful first fruits of the harvest to be blessed by the priests, and to rejoice before Thee, the Lord their God. Hear our prayer, and send Thine abundant blessings over us, and over this bounty of the harvest, which in thanksgiving, as Thy representatives, and in Thy name, we bless + on this solemnity. Grant, through the intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, whose Assumption into heaven we are celebrating, that they may keep men and cattle, wild beasts and tame, from all ills, afflictions, incantations, and venomous destruction. May they be a remedy against the illusions, operations, and frauds of the devil. May they benefit all wherever they are kept, carried or used. Through our Lord Jesus Christ....

All: Amen.

Priest: Let us pray. O God, out of the Root of Jesse, was born Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. On this day, Thou didst take up to the heights of heaven His Virgin Mother. Through her intercession, and defended by the fruit of her womb, Thy same Son, who shared in our humanity, may these first fruits of the earth protect us in time, and lead us to eternal salvation. Through the same Jesus Christ....

All: Amen.

Priest: May the blessing of God the Father, + the Son, + and the Holy Ghost, + descend upon these first fruits, and remain forever.

All: Amen.

"We declare and define as revealed dogma that the Immaculate Mary ever Virgin, Mother of God, when she had finished the course of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven."
